Religious Significance And Importance Behind Adhik Maas

As per Hindu panchang or almanac every 3 year 1 month extra comes in a year. But this is astronomical event. In every year there are 12 sankranti of sun and due to this there are 12 month in a year as per moon calendar. In sun and moon calendar there is a difference of 11 days. These extra days collectively make a new month which is known as “Purushottam Maas”, “Adhik Maas” or “Mal Maas.”

Another concept is that when there is no surya sankranti on any month that month is called as “Purushottam Maas”, “Adhik Maas” or “Mal Maas.”

If any month has 2 surya sankranti that month called as ‘Ksay Maas.’

Mythology Concept of Purushottam Maas

As per mythology Purushottam Maas is called as mal maasor khar Maas too because there is no lord of this month. Because of this problem Mal Maas went to lord Vishnu and explains his sorrow. By hearing the grief of Mal maas lord Vishnu has given him his own name and now this adhik maas or mal maas is known as ‘Purushottam Maas’.

In Vaishnav temple Purushottam Maas is celebrated very joyfully. In this month no good work is done but religious affaire are much done in this month.

Rituals Observed During Adhik Maas

During the entire month of Adhik Maas along with fasting, yagya and havan reciting Shrimad Devi Bhagavatam, Shrimad Bhagwat puran, Shri Vishnu Puran, Bhavishyottar Puran are carried out by devotees. These acts of spirituality bring ample of religious merit and bring transformation for the better in individuals.

Mantra For Purushottam Maas

In Purushottam maas you can recite mantra of Lord Vishnu, Lord Krishna and Vasudev. As this month is kown for bhajan, kirtan, kathas and donations, you have to focus on this most. The most easy and simple mantra that everyone can recite is- “Om Vasudevae Namha”.
